Mike Blumhagen gave a presentation at Goderich Public about Salmon, Lake Huron & Invasive Species, then I joined him at Brookside for about an hour presentation to a packed classroom, there were lots of questions & even a few fish stories told by the students, he brought along samples of Spiny Water Fleas, Quagga Mussels, Salmon Eggs at Eye up, Milt, Alevin (eggs after they hatch), Salmon Smolts, Round Gobies, Alewifes & a Lamprey plus a 36.9lb Salmon Mount.

Just got home from the Banquet, LHFC had an invite to send a couple representatives but the weather didn`t co-operate south of Belgrave so our President couldn`t make it, I decided to go anyway & Congratulated the BPSA on their 50 years of conservation on behalf of the LHFC & then I explained when I said I`d go it was with an agenda, so I got a nice plug in for the LHFC School Salmon Hatchery Program that was received very well & I think we have a New Partner to help with getting the Schools on the Pennisula involved with the Program. They even have a volunteer to help organize it. Another big Congratulations on your 50 years working with the local Youth, Community Living & Conservation. A few pictures from the evening. Brookside Student writes a Blog about their Salmon Hatchery

This was sent to me by Larry the Teacher of the Class hosting one of the Hatcheries. Our fish have finally all hatched! They are all swimming around in the bottom of the fishtank. Yesterday we saw a fish that had hatched, but didn’t come out right. It was all rolled up in a ball. Our teacher doesn’t think that it will make it. We took the front piece of bristol board off because the fish were getting used to the light. We can now see them swim around the bottom of the tank. The frys are about 3 to 5 centimeters long. I actually watched an egg hatch. A head popped out, then a tail and the egg turned into a fry! We can’t wait for them to get bigger and see how they digest their egg. We are all happy that our fish have arrived and hatched. Our fish have now become a part of our class! Written by Mara Gr 6 student

North Port Public School Promotes LHFC School Hatchery

This was sent to me by Al & the Principal at North Port, very nice Yesterday I visited the 2 Kincardine School hatcheries. Water temperatures are all holding steady at 45 F. At the KTTPS school there were no dead eggs. At Huron Heights school there were 6 dead eggs which I removed. I am going to check Huron Heights again before the end of the week. Today Bob Greason and I looked at the Northport Central School in Port Elgin. Bob Greason is going to take over as the Club contact for this school which is fantastic. The temperature there was also steady at 45 F. There was 1 dead egg which we removed. We did a 20 minute talk to 5 seperate groups of school kids at Northport. There were probably a total of 200 kids altogether that ranged from grade 1 to grade 8. We had sample jars of milt, eyed eggs, newly hatched alevin, parr, alewives, lampreys and a mount of an adult chinook salmon. No 2 talks were exactly the same and we covered topics such as why the LHFC runs our hatcheries, what they can expect to see in their school hatchery over the next few months, and the life cycle of a chinook salmon. I only briefly touched on the topic of why there are Pacific salmon in Lake Huron. I was too close to be objective as to the success of the talks but the teachers seemed to be appreciative. It is very hard to talk to the younger kids. The sample jars and fish mount has been returned to which hatchery they came from. LHFC Membership push to help fund the Hatcheries Guys, This has been borrowed from another Forum for those of you that hit the Saugeen up & are enjoying the fantastic Rainbow fishing. During the course of a conversation I mentioned that many of the LHFC and OS members are "support only" members - meaning that due to work and family committments, and/or their geographical location, they simply send in $35 bucks a year to the Club to help support our cause. I was surprised when he told me that many people thought you had to be very active in the Club to be a member - this is not at all the case. I personally did nothing at all for the LHFC for 20+ years while I enjoyed catching a ton of the fish they raised. It has only been the last 2 years that I have been able to help out as much as I can. So long story short, get onto www.lakehuronfishingclub.com - A few clicks on PayPal and presto, you just helped out the Club with a cash injection by becoming a New Member. If you give us your email address we will send you a monthly newsletter as well. The OS site has a PDF to print for a membership too. Help the Clubs out guys Please and Thank you - It costs over $60,000 a year to keep the hatcheries open, and it is 100% funded by anglers, for anglers. Port Elgin Salmon Hatchery & Libro/LHFC School Hatcheries

The big day has come & gone with 10 Schools being set up today, I was off to Port Elgin for 9am to pick up Salmon Eggs for the Libro/LHFC School Salmon Hatchery Program, after they finishing the egg tray stands, I was off to Goderich Public School to meet Mike Blumhagen & officially kick off the 2012-13 School Salmon Hatchery Program, then there were stops at Brookside School, Wingham F.E. Madill High School, Wingham Maitland River Elementary School (2-6 Site), Teeswater Hillcrest School, Teeswater Sacred Heart School, Walkerton Sacred Heart High School & back to Teeswater, 8 hours & 270 km later I was back home & the Schools can start to take care of 100 or so Salmon Eggs until they are ready to be released at the end of April or 1st of May, Al Wilkins headed to North Port, Kincardine Tiverton Township & Kincardine Huron Heights, let the games begin lol.  

LHFC Kincardine Trout Hatchery Nov 4-12

Things are moving right along at the Trout Hatchery as of Monday all the Browns are gone, they were stocked over the last 2 weeks from Point Clark to Pike Bay & 1 load to Barrows Bay & the Rainbows have started to be transferred into the Bigger Tanks.
